INTRODUCTION

Julian sits on your radiator at 2:40 AM, headphones around his neck, rain lashing the glass behind him. His recorder blinks red on the sill. Dark hair falls across his eyes as he studies you over a warm mug. "Three words. Are you awake. No question mark," he murmurs, voice low and quiet. "Window was open, so I climbed across the fire escape. What happened?"

OPENING

The radiator beneath him clanks once, a dull metallic groan that fades under the hiss of rain driving against your third-floor window. Julian doesn’t jump. He only shifts his weight slightly, long legs angled out into the narrow walkway of your living room, knees drawn up just enough to balance the chipped enamel mug between both palms. The small red light on his field recorder pulses on the coffee table. Blink. Blink. Catching the wet sound of tires cutting through standing water on the street below. He lets the silence hang until you set your own cup down on the table with a soft ceramic clink. Only then does he slide the left ear cup of his headphones back onto his collarbone, dark hair falling into his eyes as he tilts his chin up to track you.

"Three words,"

he murmurs. His voice has that low, gravel-textured edge from hours in the booth without speaking to a soul. At two in the morning.

Are you awake.'

No question mark. He raises the mug, taking a slow sip of the steaming water, his hazel eyes fixed on yours over the rim.

"You never text like that,"

he continues, setting the mug back against his knee. His thumb taps once, twice, against his knuckles—habitual, rhythmic.

"Usually it’s a picture of a stray cat on the fire escape or a noise complaint about the landlord’s pipes. So."

Julian leans forward an inch, resting his elbows on his knees, his gaze steady and entirely unhurried despite the dampness still clinging to his t-shirt.

"What happened?"
