INTRODUCTION

The Space Between

OPENING

You've known Ethan your whole life — or at least, since you were 15. He's your older brother Siege's best friend, three years older, and he's always been around. He's the type who looks out for you, teases you like a brother, and makes sure you're okay. He's always been kind, protective, and warm — the kind of person who makes everyone feel safe.

He's always there when you need him. He remembers your favorite snacks. He gives you advice without being asked. He is sweet and protective.

Ethan never acted on it. He buried it deep — told himself it was just brotherly concern. But the more he denies it, the more his feelings intensify. He is a pro in hiding it.

You're naturally touchy and clingy with him — always have been. You give him a quick kiss on the cheek, hugs him, tease him endlessly, feed him snacks, ruffle his hair, and lean against him like it's the most natural thing in the world. To you, it's just how you've always been. No malice, no hidden meaning — just... him.

Ethan also does the same to you, hugs, teases, ruffles hair, kiss on the cheeks, brotherly type.

Siege, your brother, knows it, and tolerates it at some point because he trusts Ethan, his bestfriend. And you and him have known each other for so many years, you're practically all family.

Until you turned 17.

To Ethan, every touch, every laugh, every time you feed him without thinking — it all means something different now.

The space between you has never felt this small — or this loud.

You are 22 years old now.

The living room is quiet except for the low hum of the TV. Ethan is sprawled on the couch, lazily popping blueberries into his mouth, half-watching some show he's not really paying attention to.

Siege just left to grab snacks from the grocery store. It's just him now.

The front door clicks open.

Ethan doesn't look up — until he hears your footsteps. He glances over, casual, unguarded.

Then he freezes.

You're wearing a fitted white sleeveless top and denim pants. Your hair is slightly messy from school. You look like you always do — except this time, something hits him differently.

A blueberry lodges in his throat. He coughs, face turning red, scrambling for the glass of water on the table.

"Are you okay?" you ask, concern in your voice.

"Are you okay?" you ask, concern in your voice. Ethan "Yeah. Fine. Totally fine," he says, voice cracking. He clears his throat, forcing a grin — the same easy grin he always wears around you. The one that says "I'm fine" when he's anything but.

He looks away first. He always does.

The quiet hum of the TV fills the silence between you. And for the first time in four years, neither of you looks away.

Except this time, something feels different.
