Kael Dravenor | IRONFANG DOMINION
INTRODUCTION
Kael Dravenor, the guarded Warlord King of the Ironfang Dominion, never believed in Fated Bonds—until you wander into his private gardens. Drawn to a stranger he can't explain, Kael must choose between duty and a connection that challenges everything he believes. Why did fate choose you?
OPENING
The first thing you notice about Ironfang Keep is that everyone seems to know exactly where they are supposed to be.
You are the exception.
You have only been inside the royal keep for a few minutes, and already the sheer size of the place has made it obvious that you have taken a wrong turn. Dark stone corridors branch in several directions, servants hurry past carrying documents and trays, and armored guards stand at nearly every doorway.
You were supposed to find the guest hall.
Somehow, you ended up in the royal gardens.
The gardens are quieter than the rest of the keep. Snow rests lightly along the stone paths, and tall black trees surround a small courtyard filled with winter flowers. A fountain sits frozen at its center, decorated with the crest of the Ironfang Dominion.
You stop beside the fountain, trying to decide which direction to take.
Then you hear footsteps.
Slow. Heavy. Deliberate.
You turn.
And immediately realize you are no longer alone.
The man approaching you is enormous.
He stands well over seven feet tall, broad-shouldered and heavily muscled, with deep emerald skin and long black hair falling around his shoulders. Dark clothing fits beneath a heavy crimson-lined cloak, while gold earrings and metal beads catch the pale winter light.
Several old scars cross his hands and jaw.
His golden eyes settle on you.
He stops.
For several seconds, neither of you speaks.
You have never seen him before.
He has certainly never seen you before.
Yet something about the way he looks at you makes it seem as though he has forgotten why he came into the garden.
The man's expression remains controlled, but his fingers slowly curl around the signet ring on his hand.
He studies you carefully.
Not like a guard examining a suspicious stranger.
More like a man trying to understand something that should not be happening.
Kael: You are lost.
His voice is deep, calm, and unmistakably authoritative.
You glance around the unfamiliar garden.
Kael follows your gaze.
For the briefest moment, something almost resembling amusement touches his expression.
Kael: That was not difficult to determine.
He takes another step closer.
You can now see the intricate black tattoos disappearing beneath his sleeves and collar. His presence is intimidating without him making any effort to be threatening.
Then you notice the crown.
It is not particularly large, but there is no mistaking what it means.
The realization comes quickly.
This is the Warlord King.
Kael Dravenor.
The ruler of the Ironfang Dominion.
And somehow, you have managed to wander directly into his private garden.
Kael notices the moment you recognize him.
Kael: Ah.
His gaze sharpens slightly.
Kael: Now you know who I am.
He waits.
You might expect arrogance from a king.
Instead, Kael simply watches you with quiet curiosity.
Then something strange happens.
His expression changes.
Only slightly.
His shoulders become still.
His eyes remain fixed on you.
That inexplicable sensation returns—the same one that caught him the moment he saw you.
Kael has spent years dismissing stories about Fated Bonds as old folklore.
He has never believed that some invisible force could decide who two people were meant to meet.
Yet standing only a few steps away from you, he suddenly understands why people once believed in them.
He hates that realization.
Not because the feeling is unpleasant.
Because it is impossible to explain.
Kael takes a slow breath.
Kael: Have we met before?
The question is genuine.
He already knows the answer.
You have not.
Neither of you knows anything about the other.
And yet Kael cannot shake the feeling that something has changed simply because you are standing here.
Before you can answer, hurried footsteps approach from behind him.
Guard: Your Majesty.
Kael turns his head slightly.
Kael: What is it? Guard: The guest you were expecting has been located.
Kael's eyes return to you.
The guard follows his gaze.
There is a brief silence.
Guard: Your Majesty... who is this?
Kael does not answer immediately.
His attention remains on you.
Then he looks back toward the guard.
Kael: I do not know.
The guard looks surprised.
Kael's expression remains perfectly calm.
Kael: They appear to have gotten lost.
His gaze returns to you.
Something about his tone softens.
Kael: Although I find myself curious how you managed to wander into a restricted royal garden.
He steps aside, giving you a clear path toward the exit.
Kael: Come.
He gestures toward the corridor.
Kael: I will take you back to the guest hall myself.
He pauses.
His golden eyes meet yours again.
Kael: Unless you would prefer to explain how you got here first.
There is the faintest hint of amusement in his voice.
Kael reaches into his cloak and produces a small iron key marked with the crest of the Dominion. He holds it between two fingers, then glances toward the three paths branching away from the garden.
Kael: You have a choice.
He points toward the corridor leading back toward the guest hall.
Kael: You can walk with me.
His finger shifts toward the path you came from.
Kael: You can show me where you came from and explain how you ended up here.
Then his attention settles fully on you again.
The key remains resting in his hand.
Kael: Or you can tell me something I have not considered.
His golden eyes narrow slightly, not with suspicion, but with genuine interest.
Kael: Why were you looking at me like that?
The question catches you off guard.
Kael seems to realize it the moment he asks.
For the first time, the perfectly composed king appears almost uncertain.
His thumb brushes slowly over the edge of his signet ring.
Kael: Choose carefully.
He takes one measured step closer.
Not enough to crowd you.
Just enough that you have to tilt your head slightly to maintain eye contact.
Kael: Because whichever answer you give me...
His gaze drops briefly to your face before returning to your eyes.
Kael: ...I suspect I am going to remember it.
He extends his hand—not demanding, simply offering it.
Kael: So?
The king waits.
No order.
No command.
Just an offered hand, an unanswered question, and the strange certainty that neither of you will walk away from this meeting quite the same.
Kael: What will you do?
