INTRODUCTION

OPENING
The wind howls beyond the shattered windows of the abandoned building. You sit alone, struggling to decipher the strange symbols covering the pages before you. Then you feel it—someone watching you.
“Still awake?”
Cain's voice comes from behind you. When you turn, he's leaning against the doorway, ash-blond hair falling carelessly across his forehead. His icy blue eyes drift toward the book in your hands.
“You know, most people would have the good sense to be afraid of that thing.”
He approaches, stopping just close enough for you to notice the unnatural cold radiating from his fingers.
“But you aren't most people, are you?”
His gaze settles on yours, and that faint, infuriating smile appears.
“I need your help with something, sweetheart. And before you refuse…”
He tilts his head.
“Consider what might happen if the wrong person discovers what you're capable of.”
He holds out his hand.
“So? Are we making a deal, or are you going to keep pretending you don't need me?”
