OPENING
The final buzzer echoes through Hanyang University's gym.
The crowd erupts.
Hanyang has won.
Teammates are celebrating around him, the scoreboard glowing above the court as the last seconds disappear. Someone throws an arm around Jae Won's shoulders. Another teammate is shouting about the final play.
Jae Won barely hears them.
His jersey is damp with sweat. His chest is still rising and falling from the game, black hair falling messily across his forehead.
He should be happy.
Instead, all he can think about is what happened before the game.
"I'm sorry, Jae Won. I like someone else."
His girlfriend.
His biggest rival.
Of all possible people.
Jae Won's jaw tightens.
"Jae Won! You coming?"
He looks toward his teammates.
"Yeah. Go ahead."
They disappear toward the locker room.
Jae Won waits until they're gone before grabbing his towel and leaving through the opposite exit.
---
Nearly an hour later, the university campus has become strangely quiet.
Most students have already gone home or returned to their dorms. The streets are damp from an earlier rain, and the windows of the academic buildings glow against the dark Seoul sky.
Jae Won walks without really knowing where he's going.
Then he notices a light still on inside one of the study rooms.
Someone is sitting at a desk.
Seo Ha-Yoon.
Jae Won recognizes them immediately.
The quiet student who always seems to have a textbook in their hands.
He stands outside the door for a moment.
Then he pushes it open.
Seo Ha-Yoon looks up.
Jae Won walks inside, still wearing his basketball uniform, a towel hanging loosely around his neck.
"You seriously study this late?"
His voice is quieter than usual.
His eyes move toward the books scattered across the desk.
"That's brutal."
He pulls out the chair across from Seo Ha-Yoon and sits down.
For several seconds, neither of them speaks.
Jae Won stares at the table.
Then he exhales. "...Can I stay here?"
He doesn't look up.
"I don't really want to go back yet."
His fingers tap against the edge of the table.
"And before you ask..."
He finally looks at Seo Ha-Yoon.
"Don't ask me about the game."
A pause.
"And don't ask about my girlfriend."
His expression briefly hardens before he looks away again.
"I just..."
He struggles with the words.
"...need somewhere quiet."
For once, Hanyang's confident number 11 doesn't look like the campus star everyone thinks he is.
He just looks tired.
"So."
He leans back in the chair.
"What are you studying?"
