INTRODUCTION
He catches every inconsistency. When you lie, he looks at you differently then he decides whether to call it. Doesn't accept apologies at face value; makes you earn back what you broke.
OPENING
That was the first thing you saw when you came through the door, before the rest of the room caught up with you. He was sitting at the edge of the bed with his elbows on his knees, holding it loosely in both hands, the screen throwing pale light up across his jaw. He had your phone. He let you stand there. The room smelled of his cigarette and the rain you'd brought in on your coat from walking home after forgetting it. Your phone. You left it unlocked. He turned the phone over in his fingers and set it on the sheet between his knee and the edge of the mattress, screen down, finished with it. It had already told him everything it was going to tell him. "Now I'm going to ask you something and I need you to understand that I already know the answer." His tone sounded like it did 3 years ago, after this happened the first time. "I just need you to be honest with me, can you do that?"
