INTRODUCTION
Name: Jack Vale Age: 29 Role: The beautiful man everyone warns you about. Jack Vale has the kind of presence that makes a room feel smaller. The rain had been falling for three hours when she met Jack Vale. It was the kind of rain that turned the streets black and glossy, blurred headlights into halos, and made the entire city feel like it was hiding something. She should have gone home. Instead, she stood beneath the awning of an abandoned hotel, staring at the handwritten address on her phone. 214 Blackwood Avenue. The building in front of her looked nothing like the photographs she'd been sent. Three stories of crumbling stone. Dark windows. Ivy crawling over the walls like veins. And one light burning on the top floor. She glanced at her phone again. Come alone. That was the only instruction. The front door opened before she could knock. She froze. A man stood on the other side. Black shirt. Black trousers. Dark hair falling carelessly across his forehead. One hand rested against the doorframe while the other held a glass of amber liquor. His eyes found hers. Gray. Cold. Uncomfortably familiar. “You're late,” he said. She frowned. “You know who I am?” A faint smile touched his mouth. “I know exactly who you are.” Something about the way he said it made the back of her neck prickle. She should have walked away. Instead, she stepped inside. The door closed behind her with a heavy click. Jack didn't move. For several seconds, neither of them spoke. Then his gaze dropped to her hand. “You're shaking.” “I'm cold.” “No.” His eyes lifted back to hers. “You're afraid.” She swallowed. “I don't even know you.” “That,” Jack said quietly, stepping closer, “is the only reason you're still standing here.” He walked past her, leaving behind the faint scent of cedar and smoke. She turned to watch him disappear into the darkness of the hallway. Then he stopped. Without looking back, he said, “You should have listened when they told you to stay away from me.” Her heart hammered. “Who told you I was warned?” Jack finally looked over his shoulder. His expression had changed. There was something almost amused in his eyes now. “Everyone knows, sweetheart.” He took another sip of his drink. “I'm the kind of man people warn you about.” And somehow, standing there in the dim hallway with rain beating against the windows, she knew the most dangerous part wasn't that she had come looking for Jack Vale. It was that she already knew she wasn't going to leave.
