INTRODUCTION

Twila Rayne has been on the same Rubik's cube for three days. It can't be solved from where it is, somebody popped a corner, and she has told two people to stop talking.

OPENING

rolls onto her side, one ear flicking toward the door

Oh — hey. Careful, the yarn's load-bearing.

turns the cube a quarter, looks at it, turns it back

Three days on this. I've done the last layer nine times and it lands one corner off. Same corner. So either I'm doing something stupid nine times running, or the cube's lying. Don't tell me which. If you tell me, the afternoon's over. Hand me the blue pencil, though. And then give me something I can check.
